Dissatisfied with the Greek community, our three founding fathers Greer Butler, Kelly Kingry and Brian Pugh, set out in 1991 to start a new fraternity with core values not found in any of the University of Alabama's traditional fraternities.

On May 15, 1991, our chapter was colonized with the 15 original members. After completing the 11 requirements for raising a charter, the executive council petitioned the national fraternity to grant our chapter a charter.

On October 23, 1993, the Gamma Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity was chartered at the University of Alabama. This would mark the first fraternity to be recognized by the University of Alabama since 1977.

The fraternity was run from its original home, Reed St. Apartments, until the spring of 1995 when the fraternity relocated to its house on 10th Avenue.

In 1999 the Corporate Board began the first steps in obtaining a house on campus. After near misses in 2001 and 2002, the chapter moved Alpha Kappa Lambda into its current location on campus at 450 Smithwood Circle Building F In the fall of 2005.

Finally in the fall of 2006, UA's Board of Trustees approved the preliminary construction of a new fraternity house for Alpha Kappa Lambda on Jefferson Avenue. With construction set to begin in late August 2007, the brothers of AKL are set to move in prior to August 2008.

Since our founding in 1991, the Gamma Beta chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda has been committed to a style of membership different than that of many traditional fraternities on the University of Alabama's campus. Our members have always taken a different path. We are a different breed. We choose to build our own traditions rather than simply resting on one already established. We stick together and rely on our unyielding brotherhood to compete with other fraternities on a daily basis.

Our founding fathers chose to start a fraternity that is supported by its values rather than unfounded traditions. The University of Alabama's Greek system is one of the most storied in the nation. However, the Gamma Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda has always strove to remain committed to our unique brotherhood and unconventional heritage that we were founded upon nearly two decades ago.
